FAQs

General

1Are herbal supplements safe and effective in promoting good health?
The old adage “the dose makes the poison” says that anything, even water or oxygen, can be poisonous with the wrong dosage. With that say, it is important for us to note that not all herbs, even though natural are safe unless the correct dosage is used. Choosing a product that is right for the condition and that does not interact with any other medical conditions or drugs/supplements will ensure safe use of the supplements. It is also important to note that the quality of the product is very important to the safe use of supplements.
2If herbs are so effective, why don’t doctors regularly recommend them?
Western doctors are trained to diagnose pathological aspects of diseases and to prescribe medication for the relief of symptoms. However, in some countries like France & Germany, herbal medicine has been successfully integrated into their medical system and doctors are trained to include herbal medicine where appropriate. With ongoing clinical trials & research on herbal medicine we may foresee a change in trend in the future and have more doctors recommending herbal medicines as part of their routine treatment.
3How to choose a quality herbal supplement?
A product with poor quality can cause the product to be poorly absorbed in the body, is not able to last the duration of its expiry, contain inconsistent amounts of the active ingredient (some may be more, less or even none of the active ingredients) or even contain contaminants or be adulterated with substances that may be harmful to the body. All medicinal, traditional and supplement products in Malaysia must be registered with the ministry of health Malaysia (MOH) before the product can be sold or marketed to consumers. This means that the products have gone through a screening process and will have a registration number beginning with “MAL” followed by 8 digits and also have a Meditag Hologram sticker (Meditag Checker app to check stickers). Next, selecting a product from a reputable brand that is Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certified can also help ensure the quality of the product. Lastly, purchasing from a reputable source can help ensure that you are not purchasing a dubious/counterfeit product. When in doubt, contacting the company of the product can help verify its authenticity.
4Can herbal supplement be taken in conjunction with prescribed medications?
It is best to seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist when taking supplements with prescribed medication as there may be interactions that you may need to be aware of. You can also contact us and our in house pharmacist may be able to advise you.
5Is it safe for children and pregnant/breastfeeding women to take herbal supplements?
The use of supplements in pregnant/breastfeeding women and children will depend on the dose, the type of supplement used and the specific condition it is used for. Administering adult doses for children should only be done in consultation with a qualified doctor. Pregnant women are advised to consult a doctor/pharmacist if starting or already consuming any supplement or medication. Thomson Activated Ginkgo, Livrin, OsteoPro, KolGard and Circulon 125 are currently not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women due to a lack of data on its safety.
